Kodachadri peak, one of the highest peaks in Karnataka, is a trekking paradise. The view from the sunset point of the sun setting into the deep-blue waters of the Arabian Sea is pure magic.
It is believed that Mother Goddess Mookambika slayed Mookasura, a demon, in this very peak and a temple devoted this deity is near the peak, at Kollur and is visited by devotees from across the globe. The devotees believe that the 40-feet tall iron pillar erected in front of the temple was the trishula used by Goddess Mookambika to slay Mookasura.
The great sage, Adi Shankara, is said to have meditated here and that Goddess Mookambika appeared before him in this very peak. Shankara Peetham, a small stone temple is dedicated to sage Adi Shankara at the Kodachadri peak.

How to get there?

Trekking through the Hidlumane falls: The trek begins from Hidlumane house, the path is adventurous and needs some agility. This full-trek is around 15 km and you will cross several waterfalls, streams and meadows to reach the peak. We recommend you hire the services of a guide to assist you through the wilderness.
Jeep ride and trekking: The local jeep drivers take you to the first half of the mountain till the vehicle parking of the Shankara Peetham. The second half has to be experienced on foot. You will trek about 5 km to the top of the peak.

Dedicated to the Mother Goddess known as Mookambika Devi, this beautiful temple is visited by pilgrims from all over the country. This is the original temple built by Adi Shankara after goddess Mookambika appeared to him at the Kodachadri peak.

Located at the base of Kodachadri hills and flowing amidst the thick wilderness, the mesmerising Hidlumane Falls is a series of 6 to 7 natural cascading falls. Travellers can park their cars at the Hidlumane house and start walking across a paddy field surrounded by fruit trees and the beautiful mountains for a few kilometres to reach the first level of the Hidlumane falls. The series of falls is hidden from one another and travellers need to trek short distances to discover the of levels. The top-most level of the series of falls is the most secluded and the most picturesque of them all, making it worth the steep trek to the top.

Located on the banks of Sharavati River, the auspicious Shree Kshethra Sigandur Choudeshwari Temple attracts tourists from across the country. Devotees arrive from Sagara/Shivamogga, using the ferry service to cross the backwaters of Sharavati.
It is believed that Goddess Sigandur Chowdeshwari punishes thieves mercilessly. So, this powerful shrine is extremely popular among devotees who have lost their valuables and visit to pray for the recovery of their lost items. An annual fair is held during Makara Sankranti (Jan 14 and 15th) every year.

Mookambika Wildlife Sanctuary with its 247 sq. km. spread shares its north-west boundary with the Sharavati Wildlife Sanctuary. This sanctuary is home to the rich, exotic and unique flora and fauna and is thickly-covered with lush green foliage like much of the Western Ghats.
You will find some unique varieties of trees and plants including Coscinium fenestratum (a rare species of climbers), Dipterocarpus indicus, Calophyllum tomentosum and Hopea parviflora.
The endangered species of turtles called cane turtles are also found at this sanctuary. This apart, the sanctuary is home to animals like the lion-tailed macaques, gaurs, Malabar langurs, wild pigs, otters, leopards, tigers, porcupines, sloths, barking deer, sambars, bears, etc. and unique bird species like Malabar pied hornbills, great Indian hornbills, Malabar whistling thrushes, Malabar grey hornbills, southern treepies, yellow bulbuls, scarlet minivets, racket-tailed drango, flycatchers, etc.

This 16-century fort, also called the Shivappa Naik Fort, belongs to the Keladi Dynasty and was their last capital city. Having been built on elevated ground, this Keladi Dynasty Fort offers a panoramic view of its charming surroundings which include the untouched beauty of the lush green Western Ghats, the pristine backwaters of the Linganamakki Dam and the Sharavathi River. While some parts of the Fort are in ruins, there are some which have been renovated. Do not miss the water tanks, the canon, the temples and the remains of the palace. And be sure to capture shots at the many picture-perfect spots in the fort.

Constructed over the Sharavathi backwaters, the hanging bridge which is less than 5 kms from the resort is a must see tourist spot. The backwaters are extremely clean, tourists are requested to avoid carrying plastic and littering.

Located in the Shivamogga District of Karnataka, the Shettihalli Wildlife Sanctuary spans 395.6 sq. km. and is famous for its wide variety of flora and fauna. The Tunga Anicut Dam, situated within the sanctuary, is home to otters and a variety of colourful and exotic water birds. The Mandagadde Bird Sanctuary, also situated within the Shettihalli Wildlife Sanctuary as an island in the midst of the Tunga River, is a popular bird-nesting site. During the nesting season, you will be able to catch sight of the myriad migratory birds.

Tyavarekoppa Lion and Tiger Reserve, spread across nearly 500 acres, is rehabilitation space for the big cats (tigers and lions) rescued from circuses across India. It houses a small zoo and a children’s park and is a great picnic spot. Wildlife safaris are conducted by the Tourism Department.

The magnificent Jog falls is the second highest plunge waterfalls in India and is formed by the Sharavathi River plunging down a height of 830 feet. The breath-taking beauty of this falls is only heightened by the dense vegetation surrounding it. To get a more immersive experience of the vaporous spray of the gushing water, use the steps cut into rocks that lead to the very depths of the falls.

Sakrebyle Elephant Camp is the Karnataka State Government’s initiative to protect and rehabilitate captive elephants and let them live in the wilderness. This eco-tourism centre located on the banks of River Tunga houses several elephants who are trained by skilled Mahouts. The adorable baby elephants are especially fascinating to watch. Wild elephants who live in the forest also visit Sakrebyle to enjoy snacks and to play in the backwaters. Sakrebyle Elephant Camp is an ideal place to visit with kids who can enjoy a day with mighty creatures.
