History of Kodachadri

Kodachadri is a 13th highest mountain peak in Karnataka and falls in the Shivamogga district. Kodachadri Peak in the Western Ghats forms the background of the auspicious Kollur Mookambika Temple. It is considered to be a biodiversity hotspot with a rich variety of flora and fauna and is the perfect trekking location.

It is believed that thousands of years ago goddess Mookambika fought and killed the demon, Mookasura, at Kodachadri. Which is why there is a temple dedicated to the Goddess Mookambika near the Kodachadri Peak. The devotees believe that the 40-feet tall iron pillar erected in front of the temple was the trishula used by Goddess Mookambika to slay Mookasura. Sage Adi Shankara is said to have mediated here ages ago. Sarvajnapeetha, a small stone temple is dedicated to sage Adi Shankara at the Kodachadri peak.
